The successful completion of cooperative learning tasks depends on group members who can perform specific functions or roles in the group. These roles can be classified into 2 categories:

1. Task Roles:

a. Initiator/Contributor: This role involves coming up with ideas, suggestions, or solutions to the group task. The individual is responsible for generating new insights and offering possible directions for the group to pursue.

b. Information Seeker: This role involves asking questions, seeking clarification, and gathering relevant information to help the group make informed decisions and complete the task successfully. The individual is responsible for researching and finding relevant data or resources.

c. Coordinator/Organizer: This role involves coordinating the group's efforts, scheduling meetings, creating action plans, and ensuring that everyone is on track to meet deadlines. The individual is responsible for keeping the group organized and focused on the task at hand.

d. Summarizer/Clarifier: This role involves summarizing discussions, clarifying misunderstandings, and synthesizing information to help the group reach consensus and make progress on the task. The individual is responsible for distilling key points and ensuring that everyone is on the same page.

2. Social Roles:

a. Encourager/Supporter: This role involves providing encouragement, positive reinforcement, and emotional support to group members to boost morale and motivation. The individual is responsible for fostering a positive and supportive group climate.

b. Gatekeeper/Timekeeper: This role involves managing group dynamics, facilitating communication, and ensuring that everyone has a chance to participate. The individual is responsible for monitoring time limits, regulating turn-taking, and ensuring that everyone's voice is heard.

c. Harmonizer/Peacemaker: This role involves resolving conflicts, promoting cooperation, and maintaining a harmonious atmosphere within the group. The individual is responsible for mediating disagreements, promoting consensus-building, and fostering a sense of unity.

d. Tension Reliever: This role involves easing tensions, diffusing stress, and creating a relaxed and comfortable environment for group members to work together effectively. The individual is responsible for using humor, empathy, and other strategies to reduce anxiety and promote open communication.
