After Muhammad died, some Muslims believed his cousin and son-in-law, Ali, should be the next leader, while others thought Abu Bakr should be the leader. This caused a split in the Muslim community between those who followed Ali (Shi'a) and those who followed Abu Bakr (Sunni).
