The split between the two sects has lasted since the death of Muhammad. Sunni Muslims remain the majority in most Muslim countries with the exception of Iraq and Iran. The split has been largely a peaceful division, since the Shi'ites lost the competition for dominance of the Muslim world early on.

y'all do realize that Jiskha isn't meant to just do your homework for you, correct? why do y'all have to mass dislike Ms. Sue for helping someone instead of just giving you the answer to your test??

to connexus students: you want the answers? go to the page that you click on your home screen to get to the test, look on the left and you should see a course tree. drag that out to the right, and look for the page that will have all the answers for you. if you didn't pay attention to any of the past lessons, just go ahead and do that. there is no harm in simply asking for a little help - but just flat out cheating on your test and expecting Ms. Sue or any other teachers to do your homework for you is just petty. they have lives just as we do.

correction: it won't just flat out give you the answers, but if you go through the unit lessons, you will get a general idea of what the answers should be. my bad for not pointing that out in my original comment.

The general idea is that the Muslim community split into two "branches" / "sections", Sunni and Shiite, you should be able to do the rest on your own :) Good luck on the test <3

Just so you guys know, I don’t think you guys should copy answers to essay questions on this site. You could get a bad grade if you get caught, which is likely to happen, and if you get caught too much, you could get expelled, so be careful

Here is my answer:

The Muslim community were split into two groups after Muhammad's death, the Sunnis and the Shias. The groups each had a different idea who should be the caliph. The Sunnis believed they needed a leader who had political skills. The Shias believed the leader should be related to Muhammad.

Following Muhammad's death, two groups emerged: the Shia and the Sunni. The majority of Muslims thought that the community needed a political leader. They backed Abu Bakr, Muhammad's main adviser, to become the first caliph. Due to their strong reverence for the Sunnah, members of this sect have been known as Sunnis. Only Muhammad's household was to become caliph, according to a minority of Muslims.
