Option 2: Analyze Reactions via Video

Student Worksheet

Background Information:

Body systems in all organisms have one goal: to maintain homeostasis. Each body system has a specialized function that helps the organism perform all necessary cell functions.

Pigs are known to have very similar body systems to humans. In this virtual lab, you will be observing the dissection of a fetal pig. This will give you a look into a pig’s digestive system, excretory system, reproductive system, circulatory system, and respiratory system.
(OPTIONAL: A reading on the fetal pig dissection)

Directions:
You have been provided with a series of videos that show the dissection of a fetal pig. For each video, you will need to click on the link provided to watch. You may watch the video multiple times and take notes to help you.

After watching the video, complete the following tables to demonstrate your understanding of the body system and answer the question comparing the fetal pig’s body system to a human’s body system.
>> All submissions must be handwritten* Remember to use 10 vocab words (see rubric)<<

Fetal Pig Dissection (Part 1)

Human Digestive System

Digestive/Excretory System

Human:

Function: The human digestive system is responsible for breaking down food into nutrients that can be absorbed by the body and eliminating waste through the excretory system.

Main Organs: The main organs of the human digestive system include the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.

Pig:

Function: The pig's digestive system performs the same function as the human digestive system, breaking down food into nutrients and eliminating waste through the excretory system.

Main Organs: The main organs of a pig's digestive system are similar to humans and include the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.

Q: How are the excretory systems of these organisms similar? How are they different?
Both the human and pig excretory systems are responsible for eliminating waste products from the body. They both have similar organs involved in excretion, such as the kidneys and urinary bladder. However, there may be slight differences in the size and shape of these organs between humans and pigs.

Fetal Pig Dissection (Part 2)
Human Circulatory System

Circulatory System

Human:

Function: The human circulatory system is responsible for delivering oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and removing waste products throughout the body.

Main Organs: The main organs of the human circulatory system include the heart, blood vessels (arteries, veins, and capillaries), and blood.

Pig:

Function: The pig's circulatory system performs the same function as the human circulatory system, delivering oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and removing waste products.

Main Organs: The main organs of a pig's circulatory system are similar to humans and include the heart, blood vessels (arteries, veins, and capillaries), and blood.

Q: How are the circulatory systems of these organisms similar? How are they different?
The circulatory systems of both humans and pigs are similar in terms of their function and the main organs involved. They both have a four-chambered heart and a network of blood vessels that carry oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. However, there may be slight differences in the size and structure of the heart and blood vessels between humans and pigs.

Fetal Pig Dissection (Part 2)
Human Respiratory System

Respiratory System

Human:

Function: The human respiratory system is responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the environment.

Main Organs: The main organs of the human respiratory system include the nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs.

Pig:

Function: The pig's respiratory system performs the same function as the human respiratory system, exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Main Organs: The main organs of a pig's respiratory system are similar to humans and include the nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs.

Q: How are the respiratory systems of these organisms similar? How are they different?
Both the human and pig respiratory systems have similar main organs and perform the same function of gas exchange. They both have a similar structure of the nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. However, there may be slight differences in the size and structure of these organs between humans and pigs.

Fetal Pig Dissection (Part 3)
Human Reproductive System

Reproductive System

Human:

Function: The human reproductive system is responsible for the production of gametes (sperm in males, eggs in females) and the process of fertilization and reproduction.

Main Organs: The main organs of the human reproductive system include the testes, ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, and .

Pig:

Function: The pig's reproductive system performs the same function as the human reproductive system, producing gametes and enabling reproduction.

Main Organs: The main organs of a pig's reproductive system are similar to humans and include the testes, ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, and .

Q: How are the reproductive systems of these organisms similar? How are they different?
The reproductive systems of both humans and pigs have similar main organs and perform the same function of gamete production and reproduction. They both have testes and ovaries for the production of sperm and eggs, respectively. However, there may be slight differences in the size and structure of these organs between humans and pigs.
