Messenger RNA (mRNA) is so named because it serves as a template to convey genetic information from DNA to the ribosomes, where proteins are synthesized according to this "message." This process of protein synthesis is also called translation. The mRNA is first transcribed from the DNA in the nucleus and then it travels into the cytoplasm where ribosomes read the encoded message to build the corresponding protein.
