The ocean's level is currently rising at about 1.5 mm per year. At this rate, in how many years will sea level be 3 meters higher than now?
This seems like it should be a simple question but the change in measurements is confusing me.
there are 1000 mm in a meter. So the set up would be
3000mm/1.5mm
meaning it would take 2000 years.
Thank you!
To determine the number of years it will take for the sea level to rise by 3 meters, we need to convert the rate of rise from millimeters per year to meters.
We know that the ocean's level is currently rising at about 1.5 mm per year. To convert this to meters, we divide by 1000 since there are 1000 millimeters in a meter:
1.5 mm / 1000 = 0.0015 meters per year
Now, to find the number of years it will take for the sea level to rise by 3 meters, we can use the formula:
Number of Years = Change in Sea Level / Rate of Rise
Substituting the values we have:
Number of Years = 3 meters / 0.0015 meters per year
Calculating this:
Number of Years = 2000 years
Therefore, it will take approximately 2000 years for the sea level to rise by 3 meters at a rate of 1.5 mm per year.
