Plan ONE Additional Language lesson in the Foundation Phase about the topic phonics and state the lesson theme

Lesson theme: Introduction to Phonics

Lesson Objective: To introduce students to the concept of phonics and its importance in reading and writing.

1. Start the lesson by discussing with students what phonics is and its role in helping us read and write. Explain that phonics is the relationship between sounds and letters, and how understanding these relationships can help us decode words.

2. Play a phonics game with students where they have to match pictures of objects with the corresponding beginning sound. For example, show a picture of a cat and ask students to identify the beginning sound "c".

3. Introduce students to a few common letter-sound relationships, such as the sounds of the letters a, b, and c. Practice sounding out words together using these letter-sound relationships.

4. Have students practice writing the letters a, b, and c and matching them to their corresponding sounds. Encourage them to make connections between the written and spoken language.

5. Provide students with simple reading materials that incorporate the letter-sound relationships they have learned. Have them practice reading these materials aloud, emphasizing the sounds of each letter.

6. Finish the lesson by reviewing the key concepts of phonics and its importance in reading and writing. Encourage students to continue practicing their phonics skills at home.

Assessment: To assess students' understanding of phonics, have them complete a worksheet where they have to match pictures with their corresponding beginning sounds. Review their answers to see if they have grasped the concept of phonics and can apply it to reading and writing.
