Before becoming a territory of the United States, Hawaii was a sovereign nation known as the Kingdom of Hawaii. It was established in 1795 and overthrown in 1893 by American and European settlers with the support of the U.S. government. The territory was annexed by the United States in 1898 and officially became the Territory of Hawaii in 1900.
