Oslo Accords (1993 - 1995)

what happened

The Oslo Accords were a series of agreements between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) signed in the early 1990s. The accords were intended to establish a framework for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and ultimately achieving peace in the region.

The first agreement, known as the Declaration of Principles, was signed in 1993 and outlined a process for the gradual transfer of governing authority to the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Subsequent agreements, known as Oslo II, were signed in 1995 and further detailed the division of powers between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

However, the Oslo Accords did not bring about lasting peace in the region. The agreements were met with opposition from hardliners on both sides, and violence continued to erupt throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. The failure of the Oslo Accords to deliver a comprehensive peace agreement ultimately led to the breakdown of the peace process and the outbreak of the Second Intifada in 2000.
