In basketball, a basket refers to the hoop or goal through which a player must shoot the basketball in order to score points. A successful shot that goes through the basket counts as a field goal or a free throw, depending on the circumstances of the shot. The term "basket" is also sometimes used to refer to the total number of points scored by a player or team during a game.
