The dominant, independent generation in the alternation of generations in a moss is the gametophyte generation. This generation is usually larger and more visible than the sporophyte generation, and is capable of photosynthesis and reproduction. The sporophyte generation is dependent on the gametophyte for nutrients and support, and produces spores that will develop into new gametophytes.
