What were the provisions of the Treaty of Tordesillas
1. The Treaty of Tordesillas divided the newly discovered lands outside of Europe between Portugal and Spain along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands.
2. All lands discovered to the east of the meridian were to belong to Portugal, while lands to the west belonged to Spain.
3. The Treaty also acknowledged Portugal's exclusive rights to trade and navigation in the southern hemisphere, while Spain had similar rights in the northern hemisphere.
4. Both nations agreed to respect the division and not infringe upon each other's territories.
5. The treaty was signed in 1494 and was approved by Pope Alexander VI to settle disputes over newly discovered lands in the Americas.
