Jesús Colón experiences an internal conflict between his desire to succeed and make a better life for himself and his family, and his feelings of guilt and shame about leaving Puerto Rico and his culture behind. He grapples with his identity as a Puerto Rican in a society that often discriminates against people of color and immigrants, while also feeling pressure to conform and assimilate in order to achieve success. This internal conflict causes Jesús to struggle with feeling torn between his roots and his ambitions, leading to feelings of alienation, confusion, and inner turmoil.
