According to the APA Ethics Code, what must a psychologist do when obtaining consent?

When obtaining consent, a psychologist must:

1. Clearly explain the purpose, procedures, risks, and benefits of the treatment or assessment to the client in a language that is understandable to them.
2. Provide the client with an opportunity to ask questions and clarify any information they do not understand.
3. Obtain the client's voluntary informed consent before beginning any treatment or assessment, and continue to obtain consent throughout the process if the treatment or assessment changes in any significant way.
4. Respect the client's right to withdraw their consent at any time and provide them with information about the potential consequences of doing so.
5. Document the consent process in the client's record, including any information provided, questions asked, and the client's agreement to proceed.

Failure to obtain informed consent or adequately document the consent process can result in disciplinary action by the APA or other regulatory bodies.
