If the characters in "The Lottery" were able to overcome darker impulses, the story would change drastically. Instead of blindly participating in the ritualistic stoning, the villagers would question the tradition and work together to abolish it. For example, Mrs. Adams could say, "Why do we continue this barbaric tradition?" leading to a discussion among the villagers about the senseless violence. Mr. Summers could then propose a new, more humane way of choosing a 'winner' for the lottery, such as a simple drawing of names from a hat. The villagers, realizing the cruelty of their previous actions, would agree to the change and end the lottery once and for all. This positive change would ultimately lead to a more compassionate and just community, free from the dark impulses that once controlled them.
