One of the darker actions examined in a story from this unit is the betrayal of a friend in William Shakespeare's play "Othello". In this play, the character Iago betrays his friend Othello by manipulating him into believing that his wife, Desdemona, is unfaithful. Iago's intentions for this betrayal stem from jealousy, resentment, and a desire for power. He wants to see Othello suffer and fall from grace, as well as achieve his own personal goals.
If Iago were able to overcome his darker impulse and indulge a higher intention, the story of "Othello" would drastically change. Othello's tragic downfall and the deaths of Desdemona, Emilia, and ultimately himself could potentially be avoided. By choosing not to betray his friend, Iago could have fostered trust and loyalty, leading to a more positive outcome for all characters involved. This change in direction would transform the play into a tale of friendship and redemption rather than deceit and tragedy.
