During the Cold War the United States, and many other countries around the world, created agencies to help find spies and learn what their enemies are planning. One of the missions I would choose to describe is the U-2 Spy Plane mission in 1954. During this mission, the CIA used high-altitude spy planes in order to gather intelligence on the Soviet Union. The U-2 planes were able to fly at altitudes of 70,000 feet, well above the reach of Soviet radar, allowing them to gather valuable information on Soviet military capabilities, including nuclear weapons installations. This mission was controversial at the time, as it was seen as aggressive and provocative towards the Soviet Union. However, many argue that the mission was necessary in order to gather important intelligence and ensure the security of the United States and its allies.
