A normal fault is a type of fault in which the hanging wall moves downward relative to the footwall. This occurs when tensional stress causes the Earth's crust to pull apart, creating a fault where the hanging wall drops down. Normal faults are common in areas where the crust is being stretched and pulled apart, such as divergent plate boundaries.
