Define strike slip fault

A strike-slip fault is a type of fault in which rocks on either side of the fault plane move horizontally past each other in opposite directions. This horizontal movement is the result of shear stress causing the rocks to slide past each other. The most well-known example of a strike-slip fault is the San Andreas Fault in California, which has been the source of numerous earthquakes due to the movement of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates past each other.
