The lithosphere is the rigid outer layer of the Earth consisting of the crust and the uppermost part of the mantle. It is divided into large tectonic plates that float on the semi-fluid asthenosphere beneath it. The lithosphere is where most geological processes, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and plate tectonics, occur.
