The following is an excerpt from legislation passed by congress in 1934 under president Franklin Roosevelt in which two ways did this new law expand the power of the federal government

1. The legislation, known as the National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA), allowed for the establishment of codes of fair competition for various industries, which were designed to promote fair business practices and stimulate economic recovery. By creating these codes, the federal government gained increased control over industry practices and standards.

2. The NIRA also included provisions for the creation of the Public Works Administration (PWA), which allocated funds for the construction of public works projects such as bridges, roads, and schools. This expansion of federal government involvement in infrastructure projects allowed for a more direct role in stimulating economic growth and providing jobs during the Great Depression.
