Melody starts elementary school in a learning program for kids with special needs and spends the next five years there. At the start, she is in classroom H-5 but finds the program to be to easy for her. When Melody was little her mother had a plastic tray with common words, numbers, and phrases on it, for Melody to point to and to communicate. Over time the tray became too easy for Melody. Mrs. V, their next-door neighbor, wants to help Melody gain even more language skills. She re-makes Melody's communication board more difficult with a larger variety of verbs, nouns, adjectives, and images of people in her life so Melody can point to them to communicate. Mrs. V makes flashcards and teaches Melody new words every day. When Melody turns eight, her parents surprise her with a puppy, named butterscotch. Then, a little while later, the Brooks family have Penny, a baby girl.

Melody starts elementary school in a program for special needs children and spends five years there. Initially placed in classroom H-5, she finds the program too easy. When Melody was young, her mother created a plastic communication board with words, numbers, and phrases for Melody to point to. Over time, Melody outgrows the board and Mrs. V, their neighbor, helps by creating a more challenging board with a variety of language elements. With Mrs. V's help, Melody learns new words daily. When Melody turns eight, her parents surprise her with a puppy named Butterscotch. Later, the Brooks family welcomes baby girl Penny.
