The Corps of Discovery stayed at Fort Clatsop for several months because they were waiting for better weather and conditions for their journey back to St. Louis. The winter months in the Pacific Northwest were harsh and traveling during this time would have been risky and difficult. They also needed time to rest, repair their equipment, and gather supplies before beginning their journey back east. Additionally, they wanted to take advantage of the hunting and trading opportunities in the area to stock up on provisions for the long journey ahead.
