The first British settlers to Australia

arrived in January 1788 and established a colony at Port Jackson, which later became the city of Sydney. This group of settlers, known as the First Fleet, consisted of around 1,500 people, including convicts, soldiers, and their families. They were sent to Australia as part of a plan to establish a penal colony to relieve overcrowding in British prisons. Over the years, more British settlers arrived in Australia, leading to the colonization and eventual establishment of several colonies across the continent.
