Torque is the rotational analogue of force. Just as force is a measure of the linear push or pull on an object, torque is a measure of the rotational force or twist on an object. In other words, torque describes the tendency of a force to rotate an object around an axis. It is commonly measured in units of newton-meters (N*m) or foot-pounds (ft-lb).
