Read the story Home by Gwendolyn Brooks, and then answer the question that follows:

Question:

Imagine how the story would be different if it were told from the point of view of the character, Papa. Using the information from the passage, rewrite the ending of the story starting from when Papa walks home (Paragraph 17). Make sure that you provide dialogue from the characters (Papa, Mama, Maud Martha, or Helen), and use sensory details and language to capture the action of the story. Stay true to the author’s voice and style. You should have a minimum of 300 words. Be mindful of conventions, so that they do not interfere with meaning.

As Papa walked home that evening, he couldn't shake the image of his daughter Maud Martha sitting on the steps of their small home, tired and waiting for him to return. He had been working long hours at the factory to provide for his family, but he knew he needed to make more time for them.

As he approached the house, he could hear the sound of his wife Mama humming a tune in the kitchen. The smell of dinner cooking filled the air, and he knew that Maud Martha must be hungry. "Mama, I'm home," he called out as he opened the door.

Mama turned from the stove, wiping her hands on her apron. "Welcome home, dear. Maud Martha has been waiting for you all day."

Papa felt a pang of guilt as he saw his daughter watching him with big, hopeful eyes. "I'm sorry, Maud Martha. I know I haven't been around much lately. But I promise to make more time for you and Mama from now on."

Maud Martha's face lit up with a smile as she ran to give her father a hug. "I missed you, Papa. Let's go outside and play catch like we used to."

Papa's heart swelled with love for his family as he followed his daughter outside. They played until the sun set, laughing and sharing stories. And as they sat on the steps of their home, under the glow of the streetlights, Papa knew that he was truly where he belonged - with his loved ones.

Together, they watched as the stars twinkled in the night sky, feeling the warmth and comfort of being home. And in that moment, Papa knew that no matter how hard life might get, as long as he had his family by his side, he would always find peace and happiness.
