On the 8th night, the narrator went to the old man's room to carry out his plan to murder him. As he stood by the bedside, he shone a light on the old man's eye, which was now open. The narrator could no longer contain his fear and madness, and he confessed to the old man that he had come to kill him. The old man let out a loud scream, and the narrator smothered him to death with the bedclothes. The narrator then dismembered the body and hid it under the floorboards.
