The Enlightenment philosophers, including John Locke, Montesquieu, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, were the source for many of the basic ideas in the Declaration of Independence. Their writings on the principles of natural rights, government by consent of the governed, and the right to revolution influenced the Founding Fathers in drafting the Declaration of Independence.
