Peppered moths typically spend the winter in a state of dormancy, known as diapause. During this time, they find protected areas such as crevices in tree bark or under leaves to hibernate and conserve energy. The moths remain inactive until the temperatures rise in the spring, at which point they emerge to mate and lay eggs.
