Wahhabism is a fundamentalist Islamic doctrine founded by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab in the 18th century in the Arabian Peninsula. It emphasizes strict adherence to the teachings of the Quran and hadith, and rejects any innovations or interpretations outside of these sources. Wahhabism has the most influence in Saudi Arabia, where it is the official form of Islam and is tightly intertwined with the ruling Al Saud family. It has also spread to other countries in the Gulf region and beyond, particularly through the funding of mosques, schools, and other religious institutions.
