Proving up was the process of establishing legal ownership of a piece of land in the American West during the 19th century. In order to obtain ownership, settlers had to live on and improve the land for a specified period of time, usually five years, before receiving a land patent or deed from the government. This process was intended to encourage settlement and development of the land.
