What are chinampas

Chinampas are a type of traditional Mesoamerican agriculture system used in certain regions of Mexico. They are small, rectangular areas of fertile land created by building up soil and vegetation on a frame of intertwined sticks and plant material in shallow lake beds or wetlands. Chinampas are used for growing crops such as maize, beans, squash, and chilies. They are often associated with the Aztecs and were an important agricultural technique used in the cultivation of food for urban populations in ancient Mesoamerica. Today, chinampas are still used in some parts of Mexico for small-scale agriculture.
