The Corps of Discovery were a group of explorers commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase territory. Led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, the Corps of Discovery set out in 1804 to map and explore the western part of the United States.
