The Treaty of New Echota, also known as the Treaty of Echota, was an agreement signed on December 29, 1835, between the United States government and a minority faction of the Cherokee Nation. This treaty ceded all Cherokee land in the Southeastern United States to the US government in exchange for land in present-day Oklahoma. The treaty ultimately resulted in the forced removal of the Cherokee people from their ancestral lands, known as the Trail of Tears. Many Cherokee opposed the treaty, and it was not approved by the majority of the Cherokee Nation.
