Lesson Title: Understanding the Language Continuum

Grade Level: 4

Objective: Students will be able to identify and differentiate between different levels of language on the language continuum.

Materials:
- Chart paper
- Markers
- Index cards with examples of various language levels (formal, informal, colloquial, slang)
- Worksheet with sentences for students to categorize into the different language levels

Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes)
- Begin the lesson by explaining to students what the language continuum is. Tell them that the language continuum shows the different levels of formality in language, from formal to informal to colloquial to slang.
- Show students a chart paper with the language continuum drawn on it, and explain each level briefly.

2. Vocabulary Discussion (10 minutes)
- Review the definitions of formal, informal, colloquial, and slang with the students.
- Provide examples of each level of language and ask students to provide their own examples.

3. Activity 1: Sorting Sentences (15 minutes)
- Give each student a worksheet with sentences written on it.
- Ask students to read each sentence and categorize it into the correct level of language on the language continuum.
- Circulate the room and provide guidance and support as needed.

4. Activity 2: Index Card Sort (15 minutes)
- Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of index cards with examples of different language levels.

5. Closure (10 minutes)
- Review the language continuum with students one last time.
