Think about a red apple outside in the sunlight. When you look at the apple, some of the sunlight is reflected off the apple's skin and that's why we see it as red. The apple also absorbs some of the sunlight, which helps give it color. Some of the sunlight passes through the skin, which is called transmission, but we don't see the color because it's not being reflected back to us.
