The main reason behind the start of the Haitian Revolution was the brutal conditions and treatment that enslaved Africans were subjected to on the French colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti). Enslaved Africans were forced to work on plantations producing sugar, coffee, and indigo under harsh and inhumane conditions. They were subjected to extreme physical abuse, exploitation, and were often separated from their families.
Additionally, the ideas of the French Revolution and the principles of equality, liberty, and fraternity inspired many enslaved Africans on Saint-Domingue to fight for their freedom and independence from French colonial rule. The successful slave revolt led by Toussaint Louverture in 1791 eventually culminated in the Haitian Revolution, which ended with the establishment of Haiti as the first independent Black republic in the Western Hemisphere in 1804.
