Unit 5 lesson 4 quick check

1. What is the function of the nervous system?

The function of the nervous system is to receive and process information from the body's senses, coordinate and control body movements, and send signals to different parts of the body to allow for communication and response.

2. What are the two main parts of the nervous system?

The two main parts of the nervous system are the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which includes nerves that connect the CNS to the rest of the body.

3. What is the purpose of a reflex?

A reflex is a quick, automatic response to a stimulus that helps protect the body from harm. Reflexes are controlled by the spinal cord and do not require input from the brain.

4. Describe the process of how a nerve impulse travels through a neuron.

A nerve impulse travels through a neuron in the following steps:
- The nerve impulse is received by the dendrites at the end of the neuron.
- The impulse travels through the cell body and down the axon.
- The impulse reaches the axon terminals, where it triggers the release of neurotransmitters.
- Neurotransmitters cross the synapse and bind to receptors on the next neuron, continuing the transmission of the impulse.
