What is the great Pacific garbage patch?

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a large area in the Pacific Ocean where marine debris, mostly consisting of plastics, accumulates and forms a concentrated patch of pollution. It is estimated to be located between Hawaii and California and is possibly the largest accumulation of ocean plastic in the world. The debris in the patch poses a significant threat to marine life and ecosystems, as well as to human health. Efforts are being made to clean up and reduce the amount of plastic waste entering the ocean to prevent further growth of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
