Historic levels of melanin in human populations have changed due to migration as people have moved to different regions with varying levels of sunlight exposure. Populations that migrated to regions with higher levels of UV radiation have experienced increased melanin production in order to protect their skin from sun damage. Conversely, populations that migrated to regions with lower levels of UV radiation have experienced decreased melanin production as it was no longer necessary for protection.
