Ralph lived in a British colony in North America. Life was hard for many reasons. Colonists had to pay high taxes on goods they bought from Britain. The British also made Ralph and the other colonists sell all of the goods they made and crops they grew to British traders. When Ralph wanted to build a farm on the frontier he could not because the British would not let colonists settle on American Indian land. Ralph did not like that the British were allowed to do whatever they wanted, even if they broke the law.
