The Missouri Compromise was a political agreement reached in 1820 that admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state to maintain the balance of power between slave and free states in the United States. It also established a line of latitude at 36°30' where slavery would be allowed in territories south of the line and prohibited north of it.
