DNA and mRNA are related in that DNA is used as a template to make mRNA. In the process of transcription, the DNA code is transcribed into mRNA, which then carries the genetic information to the ribosomes for translation into proteins. If there is a mutation in the DNA, it can result in a change in the mRNA sequence, which can ultimately lead to changes in the proteins produced by the cell. Likewise, if there is a mutation in the mRNA, it can affect the proteins that are synthesized based on that mRNA template.
