After World War I, the Ottoman Empire collapsed in Southwest Asia. The Allied powers gained control of the region and put it under the mandate system. This system allowed the Allied powers to govern the territories until they were ready for self-rule, leading to the creation of several new countries in the region such as Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.
