Muhammad, the Islamic prophet, conquered Mecca in 630 AD and subsequently cleansed the Kaaba of idolatrous objects and established it as the holiest site in Islam. He removed all the idols from the Kaaba and rededicated it as a place of worship for the one true God, Allah. Muhammad also declared that the Kaaba should be a place of pilgrimage for Muslims, leading to the establishment of the annual Hajj pilgrimage that continues to this day.
