The location of the Arkansas Post changed several times during the early days of settlement due to flooding and the need for a more stable and defensible location. The original site of the Arkansas Post was established by the French in 1686 near the confluence of the Arkansas and Mississippi Rivers. However, due to frequent flooding, the post was moved several times to higher ground along the Arkansas River. The final location of the Arkansas Post was established in 1749, where it remained until the post was abandoned in the early 19th century.
