One of the groups in the Middle East that is divided over religion is the Sunni and Shia Muslims. Sunni Muslims believe that leaders of the Islamic community should be elected through a consensus, while Shia Muslims believe that leaders should be direct descendants of the Prophet Muhammad. This conflict started with the death of the Prophet Muhammad, when some Muslims believed that his cousin and son-in-law, Ali, should have become the leader, while others believed that leadership should be elected. This conflict continues today as both groups have different interpretations of Islamic teachings and continue to vie for power and influence in the region.
