Africa did not gain independence from Britain in 1910. In fact, South Africa only became its own country that year, but it was still controlled by the British. The full independence of South Africa happened much later, in 1961.

Even after gaining independence, freedom and equality were not achieved in South Africa. This happened because of a system called apartheid. Apartheid means "separation" in Afrikaans, which is one of the languages spoken in South Africa.

Under apartheid, different racial groups were treated differently and segregated or separated from each other. The white people were in charge and had more privileges and rights than the black, colored, and Asian people. This was wrong and unfair, and many people fought against it.

It wasn't until many years later, in 1994, that South Africa finally became a free and equal country for all its citizens. This was largely due to the efforts of great leaders, like Nelson Mandela, who fought for justice and equality for everyone.
