After World War I, the Ottoman Empire collapsed, and much of Southwest Asia, including present-day Turkey, Iraq, Palestine, and Jordan, became a part of the mandate system. Mandates were territories that were administered by the League of Nations on behalf of the Allied victors. The mandates were created by the Treaty of Versailles and given to European powers such as Great Britain and France. The consequences of mandates in Southwest Asia included the division of territories, the imposition of colonial rule, and the suppression of local nationalist movements, leading to tensions and conflicts that continue to impact the region today.
