Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate sympathizer. Booth was vehemently opposed to Lincoln's policies, particularly his efforts to end slavery and reunify the nation after the Civil War. Booth believed that by killing Lincoln, he would help the Confederacy and restore the Southern way of life.
